Although being born an Englishman automatically qualifies one as an honorary meteorologist – we tend as a nation to greet our friends, neighbours and indeed, complete strangers, with our opinions of the current weather situation – no modern English weather-man has summed up the British climate in a single sentence better than the Roman historian Cornelius Tacitus, who in AD94 wrote:

“The sky is overcast with continual rain and cloud, but the cold is not severe”.
-Cornelius Tacitus, Agricola, 12.3.

Nothing changes does it? Well, obviously since Tacitus wrote that it’s got fu. . . bloody colder!

Julius Cæsar described Britannia (Britain) as “the Empires arsehole” in his journals. (Because it was a terrible place or just full of shit?) Being posted to Hadrians Wall in Roman times was like being posted to the Russian Front in the German Army during the last war!

It’s not much better in Holland at the moment. I think our summer is over. It’s already cold and raining for a few days now.

Well, let’s face it – Holland is below sea level anyway, any more wet stuff and you’ll sink! – Keith.

Just a minute – it’s stopped raining – guys are swimming – guys are sailing!

Pardon? Have you been at the Meths again? Tut, tut! – Keith.

You wouldn’t believe how many people here strike up conversations about the weather. I think that they think it makes us feel more at home.

I thought that talking about the weather was just an English thing. My French relatives always want to talk politics. – Keith.

Keith, come over to my blog for a visit. I’ve posted some pretty skies that are sure to put a smile on your face! :)

That’s right! Rub it in! I’ll send you some pictures of grey skies if you REALLY want to be depressed. Ah well, it’s all part of life’s rich pageant isn’t it? – Keith.

but without all the rain, we wouldn’t have such wonderful greenery.

I think I would prefer the sun, and all that wonderful brownery! – Keith.

When my 17th century ancestors arrived in the colonies, they felt right at home, weather-wise. There’s a saying in New England, “if you don’t like the weather, just wait a minute, it will get worse.”

I’m surprised that you can remember that far back! We have a saying here when the weather is foul, “Never mind, perhaps it will clear up in a while and rain!” – Keith.

Liquid sunshine. An apt and cheering description.

I hope all is well with you Keith.

Hi Blazing. Yup, everything is OK as I hope it is with you. – Headley (?)

Could you please send some liquid sunshine this way? It’s blazing hot and it’s making me sick, I’m not accustomed to such heat. It’s not just hot, it’s sticky.

Folks here tend to discuss the weather quite often too, I don’t know why…mighty long conversations.

Today (31 Aug) has not been to bad. At least we caught a glimpse of the sun, although the wind is cold. – Keith.

Talking about Hadrian’s Wall, some archaelogists found a clay tablet on which a Roman soldier had written a note to his mum … asking her to send him another pair of woollen socks. Well, you can’t wear sandals with bare feet in the English wintertime, can you?

PS … I like your new robes, Keith. Should I now address you as Earl Shilton?

Love it
