A long time ago, on a different blog site, I posted about how offensive I found the fact that a local pub had put a Union flag doormat outside the entrance for patrons to wipe their feet on.
At that time I, along with several other regulars, decided that we would not use that pub again until the offending article was removed.
As someone who served in the Army for several years and saw some of my friends wounded and killed in a foreign land while fighting for the honour of that flag. Now to see it being abused by pig-ignorant people in this manner makes my blood boil. I did approach the landlady and told her of my disgust. She replied "Well, it's only a doormat, you're making a fuss over nothing!". Great! I hope she didn't mind losing a few regulars.
That pub is now closed for the reasons stated here. I hope that the business of the Union Flag doormat played a large part in the closure, but I doubt it. People nowadays are not patriotic anymore, and don't give a damn about loyalty to their country.
I noticed that the doormat is still outside the entrance, but it's looking a bit weather-worn now. The brewery who own the pub are advertising for new tenants to run it. I hope that if they do find someone, which is very unlikely in the present economic climate, that they will have a bit of common sense and remove the offensive doormat.
In America there are laws about the misuse of their national flag and the disposal of it when it becomes too old to use. I wish we had laws like that here then perhaps the peddlers of toilet rolls with the Union flag printed on every leaf, the Union flag underpants, the towels with the Union flag printed on them for drying your wedding tackle and arse with would disappear off the market.
While we are on the subject there are two all-night corner shops in the district, owned by Asians, that have Union flag doormats now. Do they know what they are doing? Are they deliberately trying to offend? Where are all these doormats coming from?Labels: Patriotism |

I'm guessing they're made in China...

EVERYTHING in the fabric line in this country is now made in China, India, Taiwan etc.
I bought a pair of "Clarks" shoes three weeks ago; they were the best 'middle of the range' shoes once and were "Made in England".
They lasted 2.5 weeks before the stitching gave way (cheapo crap thread!). Prior to that the brown colouring inside the shoe stained several pairs of socks (dye made from used tea-bags?)
I returned them to the shop only to be told that the Clarks Shoes are now made "abroad" (guess where?), and they would either replace them with a similar pair (!) or give me a credit note because it was not shop policy to return the money.
My solicitor is in the process of sending them a letter pointing out that they are breaking the law, and must return my money AND an amount to replace the discoloured socks + his fee!
Nothing to do with flags, but I'm just fu..... bloody annoyed!

Here, this'll get your blood pressure up: by 2012, the only light bulbs that will be allowed in US stores will be the compact-fluorescent bulbs that have the mercury in them and are crap. There are no US manufacturers of those bulbs, because guess what--EPA regulations won't let American workers handle the materials! Guess where they are all made? In exactly a place where you would want a product made with hazardous materials to be made! :{

Debi - In Britanistan now if you drop and smash one of those things you have to vacate the premises immediately and call the council who send a disposal squad dressed in protective gear (spacesuits?) to clean up the mercury powder and de-contaminate the house!
Not a lot of people know that! Then they send you a bill!

Unions are also to be blamed for manufacturers moving abroad.
Tell those Asians that another Asian thinks they're rude, living in another man's land and disrespecting their symbols.
